For the same spaces, a small high-speed fan cannot produce the same effect as a large low-speed fan, even with a high rotation speed. The power needed to drive the fan is generally increased to the third power of the average airspeed passing through the fan. That is, a small commercial fan providing air at 20 miles per hour (mph) requires about 64 times more power than a similarly-sized fan delivering air at 5 mph. If the purpose of the fan is to cool down the heat for people or animals, the speed of air combined with the “efficiency” of the fan means that the large low-speed fans are more efficient and effective than the small high-speed fans.

ASHRAE, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, estimated and announced that the installation of HVLS fans can reduce costs by up to 49%. According to several independent studies, the HVLS fans are as effective as 12 high-speed fans and reduce electricity consumption by 86%. ASHRAE also announced that HVLS Fan has a great effect on the lowering the sensible temperature.
